The Masked Ball — Book Brief

RELATIONSHIPS, IDENTITY AND THE SELVES WE PRESENT

EXPLORE

Relationships are among the places where we encounter both other people and ourselves.

We enter them carrying expectations, experiences, needs, fears, assumptions and different ways of presenting who we are.

The Masked Ball invites reflection on the roles and masks that can appear within relationships.

A mask is not necessarily deception. Sometimes it protects us. Sometimes it helps us meet expectations or navigate different situations. But when the distance between what we present and what we genuinely experience becomes too great, connection can become more difficult.

The invitation is to consider not only:

“Who is the other person in this relationship?”

but also:

“Who am I being within it?”

CONSIDER

Relationships reveal as well as connect.

How we respond to closeness, difference, conflict and expectation can tell us something about ourselves as well as about the other person.

Roles can become masks.

The identities we adopt in families, friendships, partnerships and other relationships can be useful, but they can also become restrictive when we feel unable to move beyond them.

Authenticity and relationship require discernment.

Living authentically does not mean saying everything or behaving without regard for others. It involves understanding what matters to us while recognising the dignity, boundaries and perspectives of the people with whom we share our lives.

REFLECT

Think about one important relationship in your life.

• Who am I when I am with this person?

• Is there anything important about myself that I routinely conceal, exaggerate or diminish within this relationship?

• What might a more conscious and authentic way of relating look like?

The purpose is not to judge yourself or the other person.

It is to notice what the relationship may be revealing about how you relate, what you value and who you are becoming.
